A 4 yr old boy broke the Guiness Book of World Records by running 40 miles recently. His mother, a poor lady, tried selling him for money when a running coach discovered him. People say that the boy would have been able to run further, but doctors noticed signs of extreme exhaustion and dehydration. Budiah Singh, the four year old boy, was escorted by doctors and 300 cadets of the Central Reserve Police. Budiah's coach once witnessed Budiah running laps around a track for over 5 hours due to a punishment. Apparently, the length or the amount of time never affected him. I dont understand how it's phsyically possible for a 4 yr old to have the stamina and endurance to run one mile let alone 40!!!! This kid is like a miracle baby, and I'm sure sponors and companies are going to jump all over him and use him as a marketing tool. His mother should be lucky that she was unsuccessful when she tried to sell him. The child was cheered on by thousands of people and if I saw this before my eyes, I'd be cheering too!!! This is an incredible story, a little unbelievable but definitely incredible!
-Em-

Farewell Footy

For those of us who are local south floridians, we will be saying goodbye to two decades of Y-100's morning talk show host, Footy. For those who commute to work in the morning, Footy has provided them with charisma and wit for the past 25 years. His show, known as "Footy and the Chicks at 6" has started various charities over the years including the annual Wing Ding, which is named for him. Surely, when I think of Y-100 or when I even listen to it, its usually Footy that I'm listening to. His final show will be this coming Friday, but he is also hosting a week-long farwell tour, visiting various resteraunts and bars and broadcasting from those locations. Footy has done wonders for South Florida, including a drug-rehab treatment program in Opa-Locka. He's developed charities over the years and says he will continue to be a role-model figure in South Florida. His shoes will be very hard to fill, after all, people of my age and older have been listening to Footy for over 20 years. We will have to adjust to a new voice and a new show altogether, but decades of being on the air is a long amount of time for anybody, and I'm sure he is looking foward to his retirement. For those who have access, tune into 100.7 this week in the moring between 6 and 10 to hear Footy for the last time!
-Em-

A step in the right direction

Florida, under the ruling of Governor Jeb Bush, has issued a 12-day break in which items that are necessitites for Hurricanes will not be taxed. As the hurricane season is only one month away, the state just simply is not ready to be hit hard again. The 12 day break will not tax items such as batteries, flashlights, radios, generators up to $1,000 and shutters up to $200. The bill was rushed through the legislative process in hopes of giving the stores enough time to stock up on these items. The 12 day tax break will be from May 21st until June 1st, the first day of hurricane season. This 12 day tax break will cost Florida an estimated $34million in tax revenue and and cost local governments an additional $7 million. But, it will also save residents an estimated $41.4 million on supplies. For once, it seems like Florida and its government is trying to at least seem like they are preparing for the hurricane season. The citizens that live through hurricanes need the proper supplies to do so, and the 12 day tax break allows for people of all class to stock on necessary items. Unfortunately, it took such a hard-hitting hurricane season for the government to take action, and forecasters predict an even busier one for the upcoming years. May 21 through June 1 will be a very busy week!

Answered Prayers

DANIEL LUTZ, A LOCAL TEENAGER WHO ATTENDS DAVID POSNACK JEWISH DAY SCHOOL WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A BOMBING ATTACK IN TEL AVIV, ISRAEL DURING PASSOVER. AFTER A REQUEST FOR PEOPLE TO PRAY FOR DANIEL, HE FINALLY OPENED HIS EYES YESTERDAY, BUT IS STILL LISTED IN CRITICAL CONDITION. DANIEL AND HIS FATHER WERE HAVING LUNCH WHEN A PALESTINIAN SET OFF 10 POUNDS OF EXPLOSIVES, KILLING AND INJURING SEVERAL PEOPLE. DANIEL IS IN A HOSPITAL IN TEL-AVIV AND HIS CONDITION IS DAY-TO-DAY. A RESIDENT OF WESTON, FLORIDA, DANIEL HAS RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF PRAYERS NATION-WIDE FOR HIS RECOVERY. HIS FATHER WAS INJURED, BUT WAS TOLD BY HOSPITAL DOCTORS THAT HE WILL HAVE A FULL RECOVERY. THIS 17 YR OLD SENIOR WAS VISITING RELATIVES WHEN THE BLAST OCCURRED. ALTHOUGH ISRAEL HAS ITS FAIR SHARE OF VIOLENCE EACH DAY, THIS INCIDENT HITS CLOSE TO HOME BECAUSE IT REGARDS A LOCAL TEENAGER FROM OUR COMMUNITY. ALTHOUGH I BELIEVE THERE WILL NEVER BE WORLD PEACE, I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT TENSION IN ISRAEL WILL SOMEWHAT SETTLE, AND PEOPLE CAN RETURN TO THEIR NORMAL LIVES. MYSELF, AMONG THOUSANDS OF OTHERS, WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR DANIEL'S RECOVERY IN HOPES THAT HE SURVIVES THE BLAST. HE IS A MEMBER OF A VERY STRONG JEWISH COMMUNITY WITH HIS SCHOOL AND HIS COMMUNITY, AND I HOPE HE KNOWS JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE THINKING OF HIM DAILY. THIS REALLY IS AN UNFORTUNATE SITUATION FOR ALL, BUT I DONT THINK THAT WE REALIZE THE SEVERITY OF IT UNTIL IT HITS CLOSE TO HOME. DANIEL, IN ADDITION TO THE OTHERS IN THE BLAST, WERE INNOCENT PEOPLE TRYING TO HAVE LUNCH IN A CAFE. HIS CLASSMATES ARE WEARING BRACELETS IN HIS HONOR- A STRING WITH BLUE AND WHITE BEADS ON IT SYMBOLIZING THE COLORS OF ISRAEL. The reason- the men's lacrosse team at Duke is being accused of raping and kidnapping an exotic dancer they had hired to perform at a private, off-campus party. More than ever, this decade has reported drug and sex crimes against collegiate athletics. The more complicated problem in this case is that of racism. The 49 member lacrosse team hosts 48 white males, and the accuser is black. The question is...did a young girl take the opportunity to file charges against a wealthy, all white lacrosse team because she saw them as an easy target for money or did rape really occur?? Two men from the team were arrested yesterday and posted bail of $400,000. Later, their dorm rooms were searched for two hours by Durham police. I personally believe that the dancer is embellishing the story. It was proven that a party was held in which the accuser was hired, but I really don't believe that these lacrosse players took the extra step by raping her. These men go to a very prestigious school in which they have an amazing opportunity to study for free, and I dont think that they would jeopardize that. Subsequently, the lacrosse season was cancelled due to these allegations. The accuser, who is calling herself "Jackie", saw a great opportunity to capitalize on some money and used it. She and her family have now gained nationwide attention, going from talk show to talk show. The wonderful reputation of Duke University is now being questioned..reporters have been there all week, interrupting campus life and the students at Duke. Although this case won't be solved for a long time, I have a good feeling that no solid evidence will point in "Jackie's" favor. After all is said and done, the Duke mens Lacrosse team will be able to carry on.
-Em-

Ready for Closure

Another lead has been posted in the case of the missing Alabama teen, Natalee Holloway. Its been almost a year since the girl disappeared from Aruba during a class trip, and almost a year in which her parents, friends and family have no answers as to her where-abouts. Recently, a 19 yr old man was arrested on suspicion of involvement of the case, but to me, it seems like just another unanswered lead. A young girl disappeared in the capital of Aruba and nobody can come forth with any information...I find this really hard to believe and my heart goes out to her family because they really are hopeless in a case such as this one. Many have assumed that she has been murdered, but it would be so much easier if her body could be found and closure brought to the case. The court has received a request to hold the man, whose name has not been released, to remain in jail for at least 8 days, leaving a substantial amount of time for evidence gathering and questioning. This truly is a sad case- Natalee Holloway was on her way to a full academic scholarship to the University of Alabama. She would have been starting her freshman year in the coming fall semester after her disappearance. I hope her parents find an end to the case in the iminent future, whether Natalee is still alive or not, her parents and family deserve closure.
-Em-

Happy Passover

those of you out there who are Jewish, its that time of the year again- Passover. Here comes a week of no bread, wheat, corn, grain, pasta or any other of our indulgences. Last night and tonight are the traditional Passover Seders...the dinners in which families gather around the table and give tribute to the Jews that fell to the Romans thousands of years ago. There will be a service at the dinner table in addition to traditional Jewish meals such as Potato Cugal, Falafel, and Casaroles. I watch my mother slave in the kitchen for three days cooking a feast that takes only 20 minutes to eat but even longer to clean up. It is an important holiday for us, we pay tribute to the Jews that were stuck on top of Masada, eating only Matzoh. But, we are spoiled in our ways. For me, not being able to eat bread or anything else that Passover entails is going to be a challenge. I eat all of the above without thinking twice, but for the next 10 days, I will change my way of thinking. This weekend will be filled with religion as the Catholics will celebrate Good Friday and Easter and the Jewish people have passover. For those celebrating Passover, the week will go by quicker than you think!!!
-Em-

Close to home

Boca Raton is an unusual place for crime, but on Monday morning, the Big and Tall store next to FAU-Boca, discovered a murder. The owners, also a married couple, were found shot to death inside the store. The couple, both 62 yrs old, had the store for years, but were trying to sell it in hopes of retiring in 5 months. This murder definitely raises some eyebrows because what would the motives be behind murdering an older couple who owned the same exclusive clothing store for larger men for years??? The couple, The Mayer's, were planning on moving closer to their children and grandchildren once they retired. Ive seen this store a million times...its an extravagant shopping plaza with other stores and restauraunts, and upon reading this article, it really is shocking that people have no regard for other people. The couple have been trying for over a year to sell their store, but the high cost of rent in the Boca Raton plaza is posing as a problem. The inventory in the store totaled over $1 million. I really hope that this investigation gets solved quickly because it really is a shame that this couple was murdered in cold blood. It seems like the South Florida media is filled with nothing but negative news??
-Em-

Paris should move to Paris

Alright people, enough is enough. Since Paris Hilton has entered the spotlight, we've had to hear about her paparazzi run-arounds and her club rendevous that end with x-rated sex tapes. But the latest about Paris tops it off- her first album is slated to be released this summer. Apparently, enough money will be able to buy you a record deal because surely Paris Hilton is not the next American Idol or even close to it. She drives around L.A. in a $500, 000 Mercedes and has her own signature night club in several cities. Granted, she is apparently a good businesswoman, but she is so annoying and obnoxious in the process of it all. I dont think a day goes by in which her name is not in the tabloids. Hilton has recorded 10 tracks for her upcoming cd, surrounding herself with the biggest names that money can buy. She has recorded tracks such as "Jealousy" which takes stabs at her ex-best friend, Nicole Richie. The fact that Paris Hilton is releasing an album just further confirms my opinion that the music of our ages has gone to crap. Forget the Rolling Stones, we've got Paris Hilton!!!!!

I can totally relate!!!

A new study has been released that shows America is suffering from fatigue-filled days and sleepless nights due to distractions such as the internet, televison and late night movies. An astonishing 50 million to 70 million Americans experience chronic sleep disorders, while millions more are sleep-deprived, according to the report by the Institute of Medicine, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences. As I read the findings of this study, I realized that I am among the millions who are sleep deprived. Everyday, I feel like I need a nap or find myself falling asleep while doing work.
The study documents the connection between too little shut-eye and problems ranging from poor school performance to injuries and highway accidents. As the reports of lack of sleep increase, so do drug remedies. The popular sleeping drug, Ambien, is usually prescribed for those who cant sleep at nigt, but like every drug, there are side effects. People can wake up feeling groggy the next day or experience problems such as weight loss or depression. Although I dont think I can ever get enough sleep, I wouldnt result to using a sleeping drug to cure my problem. Psychologists say that humans sleep 1/3 of their life, I would have a problem with sleeping 1/4 of my life. There have been countless times when I have opted to surf the net or watch a movie instead of getting a night of good rest for the next day. I believe its a never-ending cycle. Maybe when I'm retired I will catch up on my sleep..until then, it doesn't look likely!
-Em-

A breath of fresh air

The only survivor of the Sago Mine blast in West Virginia has returned home from the hospital. While the other 12 miners died of carbon monoxide while being trapped in the mine for over 40 hours, it is a miracle that Randy McCloy Jr. survived. Perhaps it was his young age and good health that attributed to the outcome. Randy spent 3 months in a coma along with severe kindey, lung, liver and heart damage. Hearing news like this is refreshing considering all the negative things that are going on in the world today. This 28 yr old man still has a whole life ahead of him with a wife and 3 children. After 3 months of around the clock hospital care, McCloy is completely recovered and healthy. The other 12 men that died in the mine during the blast is an awful tragedy, but at least one positive outcome has resulted from it all. Its nice to hear welcome home stories such as this one, as opposed to the homeless beatings that are covers on the front pages of newspapers.
-Em-

My New Addiction

The rules are simple. I find myself screaming at the television as if the contestants can hear me. I have gotten my entire family hooked on this show that airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It is by far the most exciting game show that has hit the television circuit. The ultimate amount of money to be won is $1,000,000, but no contender has yet to be that successful. Although Duke was predicted to win it all, their hopes fell short last week while losing in the Elite 8 bracket. This year's Final Four in Indianapolis will definitely be exicting considering the fact that the four teams in it weren't expected to be there. The stunner of them all was the University of Florida. Although they were seeded highly, they weren't expected to make it this far. For those Florida fans, this is surely an exciting time. The Final Four will consist of George Mason, UCLA, Florida and LSU. George Mason was the number 11 seed and soundly beat UCONN last night, advancing to the Final Four for the first time in many years. This year's championship will be really exciting considering all the teams that got here upset the #1 teams. I think Florida will be very exciting to watch. They are a group of Sophomore's who are taking over the nation with their basketball skills and playing fearless. They are matched up to play George Mason in the semi-final and, Florida is favored to win that game and advance to the finals. I think this has been one of the most exciting final fours in a very long time. For me, this is a really important vote because I am such an animal lover. Considering the fact that I have 4 dogs and 6 cats, I could never imagine treating any one of them with cruelty. In fact, I dont understand how people are ever cruel to animals in the first place. Many cities have already passed this law, and Fort Lauderdale needs just ONE more vote that will take place in two weeks. If passed, those who violate the law could be fined up to $500 (not enough!) or up to 60 days in jail (still not enough!). The law would positively affect the 19,000 dogs registered in the city. Besides the fact that its just pure stupidity, experts say that for those who leave their dogs in yards, they are 2.8 more times likely to bite rather than free-roaming dogs. In this case, I would try and implement equal punishment. If somebody has enough nerve to neglect a dog or a cat, then they should serve their punishment by being chained to a tree without food or water. People who are cruel to animals don't deserve the love that a cat or a dog can provide. I feel really strongly about this piece. Not only do my dogs stay inside, but they sleep in my bed! If I had the proper authority, I would be that one person to vote in two weeks.

-Em-

Trying to Cope

For a mother who lost her daughter due to a kidnapping and brutal murder last year, she isn't coping too well. Right after her daughter's killer, Joseph Smith, was sentenced to death last week in a St. Petersburg courtroom, mother Susan Schorpen was sentenced to 90 days in jail because of possesion of cocaine charges and prostitution. Carly's Brucia's murder gained national attention when her abductor (Smith) was videotaped grabbig Carly by the hand at a car wash. Schorpen claims that her run-in with the law is due to the fact that she hasn't been able to cope with her daughter's death. Understandably so, burying your own daughter must be indescribeable, but prostituting and possesion of drugs is, in my opinion, blatantly stupid. Schorpen was arrested January 19, 2005, and she could have severly jeopardized her daughter's murder case. Smith was sentenced to death earlier in March, and Carly's mother was not allowed to attend the trial due to the fact that she was being held on these charges. Luckily, Smith did in fact receive the death penalty for Carly's murder, but Schorpen was lucky that the case was not altered in any way. Now that she will be serving jail time, hopefully she will be offered a state psychologist to help her cope, but drugs and prostitution will only ruin her daughter's name every time she gets arrested.
-Em-

Hoop Dreams

For those of you who haven't heard...last week's high school basketball made history. An autistic boy who is the manager of a boys varsity basketball team in New York suited up for a game, and hit 6 3-pointers. Jason McElwain, the 17 yr old senior and manager, has a love for basketball that most of us could never understand. He was considered too small to play junior varsity, so he has been filling the role of team manager for the past 3 years. Last week in a district final game, it was his turn to shine. His story has gained national attention and its truly moving to see a kid who struggles with autisim yet has the biggest smile on his face and works hard to serve others. His coaches and teammates have stated that scoring 20 points in a game for McElwain is more than a dream come true. Stories such as this one are truly inspirational and moving. It makes me forget about all the crime and negative things going on in the world for a moment and step back and realize its truly about the little things in life. Jason McElwain is a hero to many, and especially to me.

Amazing School Spirit

Lake Worth High School has a new project- students in the pre-apprentinceship program are working less than 2 hours a day with 95 yr old tools, but they are doing it for the city of Lake Worth. They are working to rebuild the homes that have been damaged during the hurricanes, and not because they are being paid, but because they want to help. Trojan House, the name of the project, focuses on teaching construction trades, combined with daily lessons on professionalism and work ethics, such as the importance of showing up for work on time, wearing appropriate clothes and people skills. Last year, Trojan House's focus turned to an ambitious, three-year project: a complete renovation of a neglected, but famed building at 1702 Lake Worth Road, just across from the high school. I think this is an amazing idea. If I had this option in high school, I would definitely take the opportunity to contribute to society along with learning social skills needed at the next level of work/education. This project is inspiring students to do well in school, showing that having a job is of great importance. I think this is an awesome thing that the high school is offering- it builds character, maturity and interaction with the community!
-Em-

An Untimely Mardi-Gras

Many people questioned wether or not the Mardi Gras of New Orleans should be held or not. Some stated that it helped boost their spirits of the aftermath of Katrina, others were too consumed with the loss of their homes and loved ones. Satirical costumes lined the streets, including people wearing body bags or spray-painted X's that indicated a condemmned house. Here's my opinion: 1,300 people were killed in this August 29th storm, and surely this is not a time for celebration. Money is being wasted on this celebration instead of investing it into the city to further rebuild all that has been destroyed. The streets were filled with people early in the morning, drinking along with women flashing themselves, but to me, I would consider that a slap in the face. Imagine people parading past bars and stores that are still boarded up with spray paint stating looters will be shot...yet they continue to pound beers and create an ever-going party scene. It seems like a huge contradiction to me. Dont get me wrong, I understand the whole idea of tradition and sticking to history, but not in a state of depression that the residents of New Orleans are experiencing. If a mardi-gras type celebration came into my town after a natural disaster, I certainly would be protesting!
-Em-

Tasers first guns second, or tasers second, guns first?

FAU's police department recently implemented the use of taser guns. This came after the shooting incident of a student by a female officer. The thing that I dont understand is why wouldn't the police department already have tasers, and then possibly seek to buy guns after. It seems as if this process went backwards, guns then tasers...it should be tasers then guns. The police department's efforts to stop an attacker should attempt to calm them down by any method of not harming the person first, then proceed with a gun if necessary. In the recent incident at FAU, im sure the suspect could have been subdued with a taser and arrested rather than shot in the shoulder. I understand the officer felt threatened and needed to stop the attacker, but if she had a taser handy, chances are she would have used that first. Seems like the FAU's police department has their order of operations out of place. FAU plans to purchase 10 of these $800 tasers within the next two months, and will join a list of other schools in Florida that already carry them. Not everyone in the department (which is stupid) is required to learn how to use the taser. It's meant for only those officers who want to learn. Hello, shouldn't this be a requirement??? What is the point of having tasers accessible if people aren't required how to learn/use them?!
-Em-

5 More???

Since the January attacks of three homeless people had made national recognition, 5 more homeless people have come forth, saying they too were attacked. The Fort Lauderdale police believe that the suspects involved in these 5 beatings are intertwined with the same suspects that beat 3, murdering one homeless man in the business district of downtown Fort Lauderdale. The next step requires these 5 victims to come forth and identify their attackers in a line-up, something that should be a simple task considering police believe it to be the same attackers in both incidences. If it proves to be true that these 5 homeless people were beat by Brian Hooks, Thomas Daugherty and William Ammons, then there is no question in my mind that I believe they should be tortured in return, and thus receiving the death penalty (if convicted). These 3 guys are truly a waste to our society, and we as a nation don't need people like that walking our streets and harming innocent people for absolutely no reason. These are heinous crimes, and its nauseating to think that as time goes on, more and more victims are coming forth saying they too were attacked. Contrary to the stereo-types of Asians being relatively thin, there are plenty of Japanese people climbing the obesity chart: in particular, children. Its not just rice and fish over in Japan...these kids are eating an insane amount of meals a day, including cookies, meat sauces, pastas and other various snacks. Instead of fish, rice and miso soup like previous Japanese cultures, kids are now turning to fast food burgers, fried chicken and instant noodles. Personally, I didn't think it would be long until another country besides America started reporting about their obesity issues. There is so much crap in this world as far as food goes, that it's no suprise that children are the ones to be experiencing obesity problems. 10 yr old Sayaka Oyama weighed 108 lbs at 4 feet 2 inches at 9 yrs old, resulting in a 50 lbs overweight issue. On a positive note, Japan is recognizing that they have an obesity issue among children and are therefore creating physical fitness classes for them. But, there is now a waiting list due to the fact that there are so many obese kids trying to become members of the classes. I wasn't suprised at all to see an article such as this being posted...its only a matter of time until the rest of the world catches on to the obesity in America.
-Em-

Good Ol' Myspace

Who doesn't have MySpace these days??? Well, if you don't, you are missing out...This free website invented by "Tom" allows you to customize your own personal web site that enables you to meet random people, reconnect with those from your past, or just keep in touch with current friends. I must admit, I created an account last summer and I check my myspace page at least 3 times a day. Recently, an article was posted in the Sun-Sentinel that
stated MySpace had moved to number 13 on a list for the most visited websites. Myspace also allows you to post personal blogs in which feedback is recommended. If you do have an account with Myspace, then you know what I'm talking about when you are addicted to checking your comments, finding people, and adding new pictures to your profile. Tom, the president of MySpace, recently sold this amazing invention for 580,000,000 million in cash to Rupert Murdoch. This website is 100% completely free, no annual fee, and no ties either. It really is the best website thus far created for communication. If you don't have a Myspace account, I suggest you create one....you will run into people that you haven't talked to in years, and maybe meet your spouse!
-Em-

Once again, I favor the death penalty

As if the previous blogs I have posted haven't made it clear enough, I, once again, support the death penalty in the kidnapping/murder case of 11 yr old Carlie Brucia. Carlie was abducted 2 yrs ago by a man, Joseph Smith, in Sarasota, Florida. As Smith stood in front of the jury this past week, he cried to the judge, explaining that he didn't want to die. However, when Smith was found guilty last November, the jury decided in a 10-2 vote in favor of the death penalty. Judge Owens will ultimately sentence Smith on March 15th, deciding wether he should receive life in prison or the death penalty. Smith claims that he had been very suicidal the day of the kidnapping, and when he committed the crime, he was on high doses of cocaine and heroin. Well, as far as my opinion, thats a ridiculous excuse. This man can cry all he wants to a judge, but the fact still remains that he brutally murdered an innocent 11 yr old girl, and I believe in a life for a life. Smith claims that by sentencing him to death, it will only hurt his family even more. Are you kidding me???? who cares!!! This guy ruined Brucia's family life for eternity, beside the fact that he robbed a little girl of her childhood and right to live. Like his neighbors, I agree with the fact that a huge windmill in front of a 2 story house would totally take away from the value of the neighborhood. It would look like a stupid ferris wheel sticking out like a sore thumb in the middle of somebody's lawn. If people want to save the world, or energy for that matter, building a windmill in front of their house just isn't going to cut it...sorry Brandon, but I totally disagree!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://emilyjill31.blogspot.com/2006/02/windmill-how-stupid.html' title='A windmill? The question is...did he deserve to be shot? Based on the reports stating that the male suspect was "punching out car windows and spitting at the FAU police officers, I definitely think he deserved to be shot. The officer who fired the shots was a woman, stating in another report that she shot the suspect in the shoulder because she feared for her life. The student was a large man at 6"2 and over 200 pounds. I personally dont think the officer would have fired her shots unless she truly did feel threatened. Many attempts were made to calm the suspect down, but nothing worked. As the investigation continues, the police officer is on a paid leave of absence, and the suspect does not have any life threatning injuries from the gun shot wounds. I'm sure I'll hear plenty of rumors tomorrow as I'm sitting in class, but bottom line, I agree with the officer and the decisions she made.
-Em-

Summer School or School in Summer??

It's official.....Broward County public schools will start their schoolyear in 2007 on August 9th. The final meeting was held today, and the board of education ruled with a 5-4 vote to starting on the 9th. Parents were enfuriated, explaining that starting school so early in the year will take away from family vacation time and summer camps. The school board's reason's for starting so early were due to the fact that an early start would ensure the proper amount of days in the fall semester to have a full curriculum of work before entering Christmas Break. If I had to start school on August 9th in hot, sticky weather, I would be livid. I understand where these parents are coming from, and I totally agree that starting school in early August in Florida is uncomfortable, and would definitely make a student to not be motivated to go to school, sit in a sticky hot classroom and do it all over again the next day...I feel bad for the students of the Broward County Public School System.
-Em-

Justice Is Served

The verdict is in! The three boys that brutally attacked 3 homeless men, murdering one of them will be charged with pre-meditated murder on 3 counts if they are found guilty in their upcoming trial. Reports say the teens, who will all be charged as adults, could face life in prison. But, considering the fact that Florida believes in the death penalty, I think these boys should receive death as their punishment. On January 12, for apparantely no reason, the boys went on a spree of attacking homeless men while they slept on park benches. One of these men, attacked with a baseball bat and golf club, in addition to being shot with a paintgun, died. Norris Gaynor, 45, died from serious head and chest trauma. The bastards that committed these crimes were videotaped everywhere. They were even stupid enough to attack one of the victims right in front of an FAU building in downtown Fort Lauderdale. For those of you who believe these three boys should have received the death penalty, that link will provide a detailed analysis of the beatings. Thomas Daugherty, Brian Hooks and William Ammons should be beaten to death as their sentence. But, this blog entry is really dedicated to the University of Miami. Despite the most embarrassing 40-3 loss in their bowl game, the Hurricanes still managed to sign 20 recruits. But, just prior to signing day, Miami's number one recruit backed out...I wonder why. Could it be that we (yes I am a Hurricane fan) suffered the biggest bowl loss in school history and then proceeded to fire the entire coaching staff and ended the season on a mediocre note? I'm assuming that's part of the problem. FSU and UF are showing signs of landing some marquee players, the players that Miami USED to be able to get. The majority of today's signees were from Florida, and you can check out the signing list if you are interested to see what next year's season has in store for us. Orlando Franklin, an offensive lineman from Delray Beach made an excellent decision in choosing Miami, and in turn, Miami will definitely be grateful for the choice that Franklin made. After the many upsets of the bowl games this past season, it will definitely be interesting to see if these high school players are going to sign with the schools they announced as their national letters of intent. Simply put, Miami is struggling in the recruiting department, so we must be optomistic with those who pledge their alliance to Miami.

Chili Cookoff

The weekends in South Florida are usually packed with events, outdoor shows and multiple listings of things to do to stay busy. But this weekend in particular stands out among some others. The annual Chili Cookoff, held in Pembroke Pines, will bring a gathering families, friends and chili lovers. For the first team in 5 years, I wont be able to attend the cookoff today, and I am definitely missing out! Always held on a Sunday at C.B. Smith Park, the cookoff offers a chance for chili chefs to earn some bragging rights, and compete for the best chili in the world. Besides the chili and endless amounts of beer, the cookoff also hosts a concert of A-Lists country singers. This year Keith Urban and Gretchen Wilson will be performing. Ironically, I HATE country music, but there is something about the energy of being at the Chili Cookoff that makes it a great way to top off the weekend. There is one minor problem with the cookoff, however. The chili that is entered in the competition cannot be sampled by the people in attendance, it is for judging purposes only. House chili is offered at snack stands, but we, the people who are just specators, dont get to truly appreciate what the world-winning chili tastes like. For those of you who went, I'm sure you had a blast, and for people like myself who are stuck at home doing homework, we can read about the cookoff . On another note, the cookoff definitely gathers an interesting crowd of bikers, cowboys and true "rednecks". Being at C.B. Smith park for the Chili Cookoff doesn't feel like South Florida, it feels more like being in the heart of Texas, but at least it's a change of pace from the usual boat shows we have every weekend.

No More Pictures

Every week, I read the People magazine, and every week, its the same stupid shit...is it really that necessary for Brad and Angelina to be on every cover, or at least have a 3 page spread about Jolie's spoiled little shit son, Maddox?? This society is really digging hard for anything to grasp the reader's attention...yes Angelina Jolie is pregnant, and yes, Brad probably did cheat on Jennifer, but why must we be reminded of this on a weekly basis?? Besides that couple, we must also see endless tabloids of Jessica and Nick's breakup..as if America didn't see that one coming?? I read the People magazine because believe it or not, there are insightful stories of real human interest, not this hollywood crap that I have to get through before reaching the educational aspect of the magazine that is convieniently placed in the very back. Coincidence? Nope, don't think so. While you are taking the time to read this blog, you might as well take it one step further to prove my point and see that America is so shallow. Why does our nation feel the need to disregard the fact that within the past two weeks, there has been two school shootings involving a 12 yr old and an 8 yr old? The answer is because even the writer's for these magazines get sucked into the "Hollywood Cirlce" and lose all substance to their work. Enough is enough with this Hollywood crap!
Em-

Obliterate Iraq

Osama, Osama once again we've been graced by your "presence". Last week, you attempt to make a threat/truce with us by stating if we pull our troops from Iraq, your clever acts of terrorism will stop. Well, let's just say I feel pretty opinionated about this matter. Personally, I believe that the U.S. has wasted its time in Iraq, meaning that we should have bombed the shit out of the entire country right after 9/11....I know I know, many of you might be thinking that I'm crazy because what about all the innocent women and children..well, those children are being trained/brainwashed into becoming suicide bombers. So, why even give the country the benefit of the doubt by letting them hang around when its only a matter a time when its' future offspring will be the next Osama and his men. It has also become apparent that catching Mr. Bin Laden is not looking too good; and, therefore, by dropping bombs on every inch of the country will most likely kill Osama in one of those ridiculous caves he's hiding in. Now, don't get me wrong, alot of this is America's fault. We constantly allow this caveman, terrorist bastard to make a fool out of our country by sending video tapes, trying to make a deal with us. Can we be slapped any harder in the face? Nope...don't think so!This country is a complete and total waste. We don't even need there oil, we can use other sources. If I had the power, I would create 5 or so A-Bombs and let the rest be history as our planes fly over Iraq, or the desert from hell. Everytime another tape, or statement from Bin Laden is released, I constantly question what in the world is holding us back from capturing the bastard and publicly executed him on television. It comes down to this: we need to get the Israeli army into this warzone, and let them take care of it. I do believe that the Israeli Defense Force would be able to handle this minor problem rather quickly. For those of you who have been living under a rock since 9/11, terrorism will never go away unless the people behind it are annihilated....people, check out the kill osama website.
BOTTOM LINE: GET RID OF THAT CRAP COUNTRY THAT WE CALL IRAQ!!!!!

And yes, I do support this picture...If Iraq wants to F**K with us, we'll do it right back!!!!
Emily

Dear IPOD, we salute you

After the 2005 list of most gifts purchased for the holiday season was released, the Apple Ipod was #1. After I personally received an Ipod as a holiday gift, I can now see why. The fact that I can take my personal radio, which holds 7,000 songs might I add, anywhere, is amazing. Wether I'm in the car or in the gym, technology has advanced itself to the point where we can take thousands of compressed files from a computer and can be taken anywhere. The second greatest invention besides the Ipod, is the adapater also made by Apple that allows you to connect all of your songs to your car radio, which is amazing for road trips. I can definitely see in the near future how compact discs will be thrown out the window, replaced by not just the Ipod, but all forms of MP3 players. The Ipod and its various forms, ranging from sizes of Megabytes and prices, can all be found on http://www.sony.com. The I-tunes store, which allows users to download music at a cheap price, is also a great component. This website releases albums before the in-store release date and for a much more affordable price. Not to mention, the new Ipod also plays music videos and podcasts. Like my credit cards, I never leave home without my Sony Ipod!

You're Going to Hollywood

Tuesday, January 17 2006 was a night in which it seemed as if America was glued to their television sets, watching the reality t.v. show, American Idol. This was the first time I've ever actually sat down and watched the show involving the auditions, and it didn't take me long to figure out why the rest of the world is so obsessed with this show. This show really proves that America is sad and desperate, willing to do anything for their 15 minutes of fame. Of course there were a couple of good contestants, but I think we watch in hopes of seeing some ridiculous attempts from people to sing in front of Simon, Paula and Randy.
Tonight marked the beginning of the 5th season, and while the other 4 seasons launched careers for the previous winners, let's see if season #5 is capable of the same. The reality television show era has definitely caught America's attention, but in my opinion, it seems as if Idol is leading the pack. The #1 show on T.V. has returned with its best and worst auditions and a plentiful size package of Simon Cowell's famous comments. The topic I'm referring to is that of the Stanley "Tookie" Williams, the man responsible for creating the most violent gang in Los Angeles (The Cryps) and brutally murdering four people during a robbery. Immediately, one might agree that this man deserved the sentence he received, lethal injection. But, as the years in prison went by, Tookie obtained a different route of media attention by writing a series of anti-violence children books and being nominated for a nobel peace prize.
As time got closer to Tookie's execution, he asked for clemency, and was denied. Celebrities gathered, creating a "Save Tookie" campaign, but were not succesful. Governor Schwarzenegger denied Tookie's final plea of clemency, and was thus executed by lethal injection 19 1/2 years after he was sentenced. The question remains....did Tookie truly turn his life around and deserve to live?? Many websites, such as savetookie.org
fought in his favor...but I am writing this blog to post my opinion, fighting for the rights of the innocent victims he murdered.
Regardless of how this man "turned his life around" and believed to have had a reformation, nothing can ever bring back the family he murdered during a brutal robbery attempt with a shotgun. I am a huge supporter of the death penalty. Tookie Williams was and always will be a murderer, regarldess of how much he contributed to society in his later years. In fact, im such a believer in the system that I would even go as far as saying that this man should have been murdered the same way as his victims- execution style with a shotgun...then again, that's just my opinion. So, as Toookie's memory lives on with those who supported him, I among others am happy to see a man with so much disregard for another's life to be rid of this planet.

-Emily-
